Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area |
National marine conservation areas (NMCA) are part of a nation-wide family of protected areas managed by Parks Canada. By establishing representative examples of unique aquatic areas across the country, Parks Canada strives to conserve delicate marine ecosystems. Traditional activities and ecologically sustainable uses including fishing and boating will continue to be enjoyed.
There are many ways to experience Lake Superior National
Marine Conservation Area once established: Drive along
the north shore and enjoy the awesome vistas; paddle, boat,
and fish in the shelter of its bays; explore the geology of
the oldest rocks on earth; meet people whose ancestors have
lived here for millennia; and discover the awe and majesty
of a lake that is often referred to as an inland sea.
Visit the many lighthouse stations along the NMCA that provides
safe harbours and a destination.
Parks Canada manages three protected areas along Lake Superior --the Sault Canal National Historic Site, Pukaskwa National Park and the soon to be established Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area. The North of Superior Marina Marketing Association and Parks Canada are collaborating to provide greater capacity for public education, research and promotion along Lake Superior's north shore, thus improving communications with visitors. It may also lead to a better understanding of the public's perceptions and expectations, helping to improve services and programs for visitors to the north shore.
NOTE: Normal boating practices will continue within the Lake Superior MNCA. There is no requirement for special permits or permissions.
